- Lead and perform multidisciplinary (architecture, requirements, interfaces, schedule, cost, user) 1st Look impact analysis that highlights impact to NGA from Mission Partner ground modernization activities
- Work with GEOINT Users to understand and quantify mission impacts from joint Agency GEOINT architecture ground modernization activities (e.g., System Retirements); develop Mission Use Cases, CONOPS alternatives, Requirements to satisfy capability gaps
- Execute deep dive analysis to develop COAs and recommendations to mitigate impacts to NGA from Mission Partner ground modernization activities
- Provide technical oversight, joint risk management, and continuous enterprise reporting as solutions are implemented
- Participate in NGA Digital Engineering (DE) Program Increment Planning Events, Demos, and Forums as a DE Stakeholder/User, to drive development of Features to support Integration and Modernization Division analysis and visualization
- Participate in Joint Agency and NGA Boards and Forums to drive ground modernization activities and identify areas of risk and concern for elevation to the Government Customer
- Participate in Joint Agency and NGA Risk Management processes
- Facilitate a single point of entry for Mission Partners to engage
- Coach systems engineers from other organizations on NGA Enterprise Engineering processes
- Mentor and oversee the work of Mid- and Junior-Level Contractor Systems Integrators and Engineers on the Joint Agency Engineering & Integration Team
- Identify areas of growth and expansion of the Joint Agency Engineering & Integration Team Work; with the Project Lead to propose new tasking to the Government Customer
Peraton is seeking an Optical Communications Engineer to join our team in Greenbelt, MD to support our Space Exploration Network Services and Evolution (SENSE) contract at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This position will be primarily locally remote, with some travel to the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD and other NASA locations as needed, such as Las Cruces, NM, and will require a person who is within a commutable distance locally.
As prime contractor on the SENSE contract, Peraton is responsible for the operation, maintenance, sustainment, and systems engineering of NASA’s worldwide satellite communication networks. In this position, you will become part of NASA’s return to the moon, support new earth and space science missions, and launch vehicles. You will be an integral part of a world class team that ensures NASA space-ground communications are reliable and meet mission requirements.
As an Optical Communications Engineer, you will work in a dynamic, team-based development environment for the NASA Space and Ground Networks, supporting the Networks operations, test and integration of electronic and electromechanical systems.
The project will support implementation of an Optical Communications System to plan and demonstrate an operational optical communications link for Orion Ground Segment (O2OGS) on Artemis II for the NASA Space Relay (SR). The Orion Artemis II Optical Communication (O2O) is one of the Developmental Test Objectives for the Artemis II lunar mission. This is a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Space Communications and Navigation initiative to demonstrate the operational utility of free space optical communications for Human Spaceflight missions. It is part of the NASA approach to improve timeliness and capacity of communications for human space-flight exploration missions. The Artemis II mission is the first crewed mission of the Orion spacecraft, planned to take four astronauts on a 10-day trajectory around the Moon. Free space optical communications have never been demonstrated with a crewed, lunar trajectory mission.
***As this role will be supporting testing and operations of the O2O system in support of the Artemis II launch, it will require 25% – 50% travel to White Sands, New Mexico (Las Cruces), for all events in 2024.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Develop and prepare for the execution of comprehensive test and evaluation plans, procedures and schedules which verify and validate enterprise capabilities, system requirements, and performance.
- Coordination and support for all levels of testing, including; component, system, and mission to include NASA (Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), Johnson Space Center (JSC), and Glenn Research Center (GRC), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)/Lincoln Labs (LL), and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
- Integrate large telescope assemblies including the Gimbel and other system elements together as a whole and perform analysis and evaluations of these systems and subsystems under tests including implementation of design changes, general troubleshooting, and corrective actions.
- Interface with engineering to ensure requirements are met and utilize tools such as STK, Zemax, Matlab and LabView to assist with test and evaluation activities.
- Develop build documentation, test plans, and build logistics for system level and subassembly products.
- Develop (mechanical) integration work instructions including build/test logistics. Build test fixtures to support system and subassembly testing.
- Conduct test readiness reviews for system integration, test, evaluation and transition activities.
- Compile data and define changes required in testing configurations, testing procedures, testing processes, or new testing requirements.
- Assess performance using evaluation criteria and technical performance measures. Performs analysis of test results and prepares comprehensive system evaluation test reports and risk assessments.
- Support the development, coordination, and presentation of Key Decision Point (KDP) Presentations (e.g., System Integration Review (SIR), System Acceptance Review (SAR), Operational Readiness Review (ORR), etc.). These reviews are presented to upper level NASA and Peraton Management.
