Overview

We are seeking a motivated LINUX or UNIX Network Engineer /Programmer to work in a dynamic research environment. This position will work on a variety of network research projects.  Specific experience with all of hardware, software, and network protocols is not required, however it is essential to have the ability and desire to learn new things and adapt to an environment which is very different than a traditional IT environment.

 

The position will be part of a small team at the Naval Research Laboratory's Center for Computational Science. In addition to working on network research projects, this team plans, designs, and maintains the network's infrastructure.

Responsibilities

What you'll do...

  • Design, implement, and maintain network infrastructure
  • Participate in network hardware and software test and evaluation
  • Perform network administration for research project environments
  • Give in technical presentations
  • Work both in a team and independently
  • Some travel in greater Washington/Baltimore area

Qualifications

 

You'd be a great fit if you....

  • Have a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or related technical field and with a minimum of 5 years of experience. Additional experience and certifications may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Have a solid understanding of architecture, design, and engineering concepts for local and wide area networks.
  • Have experience with all the OSI model layers.
  • Have a solid understanding of network protocols and their implementation.
  • Have a solid understanding and hands-on experience with network security and concepts.
  • Have hands on network infrastructure administration.
  • have the ability to install open source software in a collaborative environment with source code and package management.
  • Have Linux/Unix based operating systems experience beyond user level.
  • Have experience with task automation via scripting in a Linux/Unix environment.
  • Are capable of creating documentation, network diagrams, and technical papers.
  • Have the ability to work both in a team and independently and to manage time effectively.
  • Have strong inter-personal and communications skills.

 

It’d be even better if you...

  • Have hands on experience with integrating multi-vendor network equipment including hardware from Arista, Dell, Cisco, Aruba, Brocade, and Juniper.
  • Have a working knowledge of network equipment CLIs.
  • Have experience programming network applications in C or C++.
  • Python, Perl or shell scripting experience.
  • Have hands-on experience in Redhat or CentOS.
  • have the ability to build open software.
  • Are familiar with Git.
  • Have hands-on experience with open source network monitoring tools.
  • Have 100 Gigabit High-speed networking and Infiniband experience.
  • Have familiarity with DISA STIGs, RMF, and the DoD Certification and Accreditation (C&A) process.
  • Have a certification for DoD 8570 (Security+, GSEC, etc).
