  • Overview

    Peraton is seeking a mid-level Chemist to provide support for our NAVAIR customer in Lexington Park/ Patuxent River, MD.

    Responsibilities

    The primary duties include performing a wide range of analyses on aviation turbine and marine diesel fuels and lubricants. Applicants should be comfortable in the use and routine maintenance of a wide array of analytical instrumentation. Instrument specific training will be provided, but applicants should be familiar with trace metals analysis, especially Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP)-Optical Emission Spectra (OES) and ICP-Tandem Mass Spectrometer (MS/MS), gas chromatography, and normal phase and reverse phase high pressure liquid chromatography.

    The individual may be required to assist senior chemists in conducting laboratory testing or work on longer term projects. Typical project areas include the Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation of: 

    • 1) Compounds/compound classes contributing to poor marine diesel storage stability;
    • 2) Constituents adversely impacting aviation turbine fuel thermal stability;
    • 3) Detection of storage stability additives;
    • 4) Use of high resolution mass spectroscopy and/or element specific detectors coupled with gas chromatography to identify and quantify heteroatom species in middle distillate fuels, and;
    • 5) Characterization of high molecular weight materials that are fuel semi-soluble or insoluble. 

    Qualifications

    REQUIRED:

    • Minimum requirements are a BS degree and 5+ years of related Chemistry experience; an advanced degree (PHD) is highly preferred; applicants with an advanced degree will be given preference. With a PHD, academic lab experience will be acceptable.
    • The desired advanced degree should be in Organic or Analytical Chemistry, although other disciplines of chemistry will be acceptable.
    • A minimum of 5 years of laboratory test experience is required.

    PREFERRED:

    • Individual should be familiar with trace metals analysis, especially Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP)-Optical Emission Spectra (OES) and ICP-Tandem Mass Spectrometer (MS/MS), gas chromatography, and normal phase and reverse phase high pressure liquid chromatography.
    • A knowledge of fuels and lubricant chemical and physical properties is desired.
    • Excellent teamwork
    • Presentation skills capable of defending a technical position and/or recommendation.
    • Good communication skills, and knowledge and experience in procedures for writing technical procedures for a non-technical audience.

    SECURITY CLEARANCE:

    This position requires the candidate to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.  In order to obtain a clearance, you need to be a U.S. Citizen and show proof of citizenship.
