  • Overview

    We are seeking a senior Engineer with a background in Aerospace, Mechanical or Physics, in Colorado Springs, CO, to support our Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Energy (DOE) hardening & vulnerability (H&V) assessment and research programs.

     

    Our group performs system hardening technology research and development and H&V assessments of advanced strategic system design concepts. We specialize in modeling and analysis: radiation transport analysis using codes such as CEPXS, MCNP and ITS; equation-of-state (EOS) modeling and thermo-mechanical shock (TMS) analysis using codes such as PUFF, WONDY and ALE3D; finite element modeling of impulsively driven structural response and thermo-structural response (TSR) analysis using codes such as ABAQUS, DYNA3D and ALE3D; and system generated electro-magnetic pulse (SGEMP) analysis using codes such as MEEC and Emphasis. We plan, design, fabricate and conduct TMS, TSR, impulse and SGEMP experiments in facilities such as Sandia’s Z Machine (x-ray), LLNL’s National Ignition Facility (x-ray), Sandia’s LIHE (impulse), NRL’s GAMBLE II (ion beam), DTRA’s Pithon (electron beam) and Peraton’s plate impact gas gun. 

     

    We have an immediate opening for a senior Engineer (Materials and Structures Analyst) with experience in material modeling, structural response, and engineering analysis using hydrocode and finite element modeling techniques. In support of H&V assessments of advanced strategic systems design concepts, the candidate will perform material response and structural dynamics analyses of energy deposition, TMS, TSR and impulse effects in strategic systems using specialized radiation transport, hydrodynamic, and finite element structural response codes. 

    Responsibilities

    The candidate will be expected to perform analysis tasks including:

    • Perform mechanical response analyses of energy deposition, TMS, TSR, and impulse effects in strategic systems materials and structures.
    • Generate complex meshes, specify constitutive model parameters, and properly model loads, boundary conditions, contact, bonds, and fasteners.
    • Inspect simulation results and debug modeling issues.
    • Evaluate modeling assumptions and theory and estimate uncertainty.
    • Analyze simulation and experimental results to draw conclusions.
    • Interact with test engineers to assist in the design and analysis of structural response, material characterization, and model validation experiments.
    • Assist in the development of multi-scale material models.

    The role further requires the candidate to:

    • Participate in team brainstorming sessions to assist in the definition of analysis requirements and objectives.
    • Prepare formal analysis plans to address requirements and objectives.
    • Prepare technical reports and presentations that effectively communicate results, supporting data, and conclusions.
    • Defend results at periodic customer and peer review meetings.
    • Work independently as well as part of a team.
    • Provide mentorship of early career staff and interns.
    • Travel to customer sites for technical exchange meetings.
    • Participate in collaborations with DoD, DOE, and international laboratories.

    Qualifications

    REQUIRED:

    • MS degree in Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical or Physics) with 6+ years of related experience or a PhD degree in Engineering with 3+ years of related experience. An advanced degree is preferred and candidates with a PhD will be given preference.
    • Experience (>5 years) performing linear and non-linear thermal, dynamic and structural finite element analyses of complex systems.
    • Experience (>5 years) with ABAQUS, ANSYS or similar analysis software.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with systems and subsystems qualification analysis and testing.

    PREFERRED:

    • Basic knowledge of and the ability to become proficient with any of the following engineering tools: Matlab, Python, Solidworks, ProE/CREO, Fortran, C++.
    • Basic knowledge of and the desire to become proficient with any of the following engineering/physics codes: CEPXS, PUFF, WONDY, MCNP, ITS, PATRAN, NASTRAN, DYNA3D, ALE3D, CTH.
    • Demonstrated ability to meet milestones and deadlines.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
    • Demonstrated ability to successfully mentor early career staff and interns.
    • Demonstrated ability to create and present briefings for the customer.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills—particularly in technical reports and presentations.
    • Proficient with Windows and/or Linux operating system.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint and Excel).

    SECURITY CLEARANCE:

     

    This position requires the candidate to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret and/or a DOE Q security clearance. In order to obtain a clearance, the candidate will need to be a U.S. citizen and show proof of citizenship. Candidates with an active DoD Top Secret and/or DOE Q clearance will be given preference.
