Business Development Director — Department of State

Peraton | Federal Civilian Sector | DC Metro Area | U.S. Citizenship Required

Behind Every Embassy, Every Visa, Every Diplomatic Mission — There's Technology. And There's a Team Behind That Technology.

From ConsularOne to enterprise cloud migration to Zero Trust cybersecurity — the Department of State is in the middle of the largest technology transformation in its history. Peraton is right at the center of it, and we're looking for a Business Development Director to lead the growth of our State Department account and turn deep customer knowledge into a portfolio of defining wins.

If you've built your career inside the State Department BD community — and you want a platform that will back your strategy, your relationships, and your biggest bets — let's talk.

Why This Role Stands Out

  • A customer with global reach. State's mission spans 270+ posts worldwide. The technology bets they're making today will shape American diplomacy for the next decade.
  • Real pipeline scale. You'll be building and prosecuting a $500M+ pipeline — the kind of portfolio that gets noticed inside and outside the company.
  • A direct line to leadership. You'll report to the Senior Director of Business Development for the Federal Civilian Sector and operate as an integral member of the sector growth team — not buried three layers down.
  • Strategic, not transactional. This role rewards the BD professional who shapes requirements early, builds market intelligence, and runs a disciplined campaign — not the one waiting for the RFP to drop.

What You'll Do

  • Own the pipeline. Create, identify, develop, and qualify opportunities aligned to Peraton's strategic campaigns — driving meaningful, measurable revenue growth.
  • Hit the number. Achieve acquisition and sales goals through new business wins, contract recompetes, teaming, and organic program growth.
  • Build the plan. Develop and continuously refresh a strategic growth plan and associated pipeline, consistent with corporate campaign strategy and goals.
  • Be the customer's trusted advisor. Serve as the primary interface with the State Department customer community for assigned opportunities — and build real, durable relationships through effective, consistent communication.
  • Shape what's coming. Influence requirements and acquisition strategies before the formal solicitation lands — the work that separates a good BD professional from a great one.
  • Hunt for what's next. Identify and target new markets, adjacencies, and partnerships that fit Peraton's discriminators.
  • Run a disciplined process. Embrace Peraton's Business Acquisition Process and effectively manage and communicate opportunities, pursuit plans, and risk to leadership and technical teams.
  • Bring solutions to life. Work with internal technical and program management teams to translate capabilities into RFIs, market surveys, white papers, briefings, and major event demonstrations that resonate with the customer.

Qualifications

What You Bring

Must-Haves

  • 16+ years of professional work experience, including 7+ years in business development or capture focused on the Department of State and/or other federal agencies.
  • Proven track record supporting business development with successful single-award wins
  • Demonstrated ability to build and prosecute a pipeline of $500M+
  • A deep, current understanding of customer activities, mission priorities, and acquisition dynamics — not headlines, but real insight
  • Current, broad market relationships and a track record of building partnerships with strategic teaming partners (prime and sub)
  • Matured relationships across federal government agencies
  • Ability to think strategically and operate independently
  • Exceptional business acumen, integrity, professionalism, and high energy
  • A highly effective communicator equally at home with executives, program managers, and federal customers
  • U.S. Citizenship required; must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
  • Local to the DC Metro area, with willingness to travel as needed for customer meetings and conferences

Nice-to-Haves

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Information Technology or related field
  • Active Secret security clearance
  • An established personal network across the State Department and the broader federal civilian BD community
  • Experience navigating complex teaming ecosystems on IT modernization, cybersecurity, or mission systems pursuits
