About Peraton

Peraton is a premier national security and enterprise IT company delivering mission-critical solutions across every domain — land, sea, space, air, and cyberspace — for U.S. government agencies and all branches of the armed forces. We are driven by a commitment to protecting what matters most.

Program Overview

This role supports the FAA's Brand New Air Traffic Control System (BNATCS) contract, a flagship program focused on modernizing the National Airspace System (NAS). The program encompasses aviation safety, air traffic management, and next-generation airspace technology. As the Cloud Application Migration Architect, you will be the driving force behind determining how — and whether — legacy NAS applications move to the cloud.

Role Summary

Peraton is seeking an experienced Cloud Application Migration Architect to lead the assessment, planning, and design of application migration strategies for NAS modernization. This senior role is the critical bridge between legacy systems and modern cloud environments — you will evaluate application portfolios, determine cloud readiness, identify technical and organizational blockers, and design tailored migration approaches for each workload. You will work across engineering, operations, and program leadership to ensure that every migration decision is grounded in rigorous analysis and aligned with FAA mission requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead comprehensive application portfolio assessments to create a detailed inventory of all applications within existing NAS systems and develop a catalog of IdCAM services, functionality, dependencies, data flows, integration points, and ownership.
  • Evaluate each application's cloud readiness using structured frameworks (e.g., the AWS 7 R's of migration: Rehost, Replatform, Refactor, Repurchase, Retire, Retain, Relocate or the Gartner 5 R framework: Rehost, Refactor, Revise, Rebuild, and Replace.)
  • Identify and document migration blockers — technical debt, licensing constraints, latency requirements, data sovereignty issues, safety-critical dependencies, and organizational readiness gaps at portfolio, application group and application specific levels
  • Design application-specific migration strategies that account for application support purpose, risk tolerance, downtime constraints, and mission continuity requirements
  • Develop detailed migration roadmaps with sequencing, wave planning, and dependency mapping across the application portfolio
  • Architect target-state cloud environments (AWS GovCloud, Azure Government) for migrated applications, including compute, storage, networking, and integration patterns
  • Define and validate proof-of-concept migrations and pilot programs to de-risk complex workload transitions
  • Establish migration success criteria, rollback plans, and post-migration validation procedures
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to ensure migrated applications meet FedRAMP, RMF, NIST 800-53, and Zero Trust requirements in their target environments
  • Partner with application owners, system engineers, and operations teams to build consensus on migration approaches and manage change
  • Translate complex migration trade-offs and technical risks into clear, actionable recommendations for executive and non-technical stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain migration playbooks, patterns, and reusable frameworks to accelerate future waves

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
  • 15+ years of experience in cloud migration, application modernization, enterprise architecture, or systems engineering
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related field (or 4 additional years of relevant experience in lieu of degree)
  • Proven track record of leading large-scale application migration programs involving hundreds of workloads across diverse technology stacks with a minimum of six successful cloud migration programs for reference purposes in interviews
  • Deep expertise in hybrid and multi-cloud environments (AWS GovCloud, Azure Government) including cloud-native services, landing zone design, and migration tooling (e.g., AWS Migration Hub, Azure Migrate, CloudEndure)
  • Strong understanding of application architecture patterns — monolithic, SOA, microservices, event-driven — and the migration implications of each
  • Hands-on experience with application discovery and dependency mapping tools and methodologies such as CAST Highlight, Datadog, and AWS specific tooling
  • Demonstrated knowledge of FedRAMP, RMF, NIST 800-53, and federal compliance as it applies to migrated workloads
  • Experience supporting federal or DoD programs with complex legacy environments
  • Background in mission-critical or safety-critical systems where migration risk management is paramount
  • Experience with Landing Zones and Trusted Secure Enclaves
  • ITIL certification and experience integrating migration activities into ITSM processes
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive alignment across engineering, security, and operations stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with FAA, NAS, or aviation safety systems and their unique operational constraints
  • Familiarity with migrating real-time systems, low-latency architectures, and edge computing workloads
  • Background in network architecture (SD-WAN, secure transport) as it relates to hybrid cloud connectivity for migrated applications
  • Experience with AIOps, observability platforms, and automated performance baselining for pre- and post-migration comparison
  • Hands-on experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible) in migration contexts
  • Relevant certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect Professional, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, TOGAF, or AWS Migration Specialty (retired or equivalent)
