Responsibilities

The Office of Space Weather Observations (SWO) under NESDIS is responsible for advancing space weather observational capabilities to meet NOAA programmatic needs. NOAA’s Space Weather Next (SWX) program maintains and extends space weather observations from various vantage points, selected to most efficiently provide comprehensive knowledge of the Sun and the near-Earth space environment needed to protect our technological infrastructure. 

 The Space Weather Ground Services (SWGS) is responsible for comprehensive ground services for all SWX projects, ensuring successful implementation and operation of observing assets and ensuring the continuity of space weather measurements made by SWFO-L1 and the GOES-R series satellites. 

 The SWGS Mission Operations Services (MOS) program must provide a full mission satellite command and control solution to support the L1 Series with two new independently launched observatories. 

Overview:  

Peraton is seeking a Linux/Windows Systems Administrator to support activities across a new satellite ground system development program supporting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This position will support all administration activities throughout the full system lifecycle—from architecture and design through integration, assessment, authorization, operational deployment and sustainment. 

The selected candidate will be responsible for supporting the program’s infrastrucutre and processes for a FISMA High-impact system in a cloud-based environment. This role requires close collaboration with other program functional elements including Systems Engineering Integration and Test (SEIT), Software Engineering, Networks, Security, and Operations to ensure infrasturucture and applications are implemented and maintained per system design documentation. 

 

  • Provide support for implementation, troubleshooting and maintenance of Information Technology (IT) systems within Linux and Windows infrastructures.  
  • Understand and implement hardening/STIG policies as defined by client and industry standards. 
  • Windows system administration, managing Active Directory, group policy and DNS in support of multi-site environments. 
  • Management of VMware vSphere (including vCenter and ESXi) supporting multi-site environments. 
  • Configure and manage Linux/Windows operating system software to include cloud-based compute, storage, database and containerization infrastructure and applications. (In Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS) or other CSP) 
  • Management, coordination, and implementation of software upgrades, patches, hot fixes on Linux/Windows servers and workstations, leveraging tools such as Satellite and BigFix.  
  • Collaborate with other teams and team members to develop automation strategies and deployment processes. 
  • Identify issues and create improvement processes to help with the reduction of incident outage times. 
  • Develop and maintain O&M Standard Operating Procedures for developed capabilities. 
  • Write and edit scripts in Python, Perl, Powershell, Java, C, etc.    
  • Utilize JIRA in an Agile development environment. 
  • Support development and maintenance of automated testing.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years with BS/BA; Minimum of 3 years with MS/MA; Minimum of 0 years with Ph.D. 
  • 9 years of relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree. 
  • Ability to obtain and hold a Public Trust clearance – US Citizenship is required 
  • Systems Administration experience administering user accounts, performing server subsystem configuration, network management, installation of software, performing backups, configuration management, and general system maintenance 
  • Windows system administration 2019/2022 Server, Active directory topology, DNS, GPO management 
  • Linux system administration RHEL 7/8/9 Server 
  • Understanding of fundamental networking and distributed computing environment concepts, Microsoft Windows and Linux desktop systems, performance tuning and capacity planning of servers (hardware and software levels) 
  • Experience working in a cloud environment utilizing native cloud tools in concert with deployed third party applications 
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment 
  • Familiar with Systems Engineering processes  

 

Desired Qualifications: 

 

  • Experience working within a distributed virtual team environment, with proficiency in remote collaboration tools and practices. 
  • AWS certification or similar CSP certifications 
  • Experience with Jira/ Confluence Atlassian tools 
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform, CloudFormation and Ansible 
  • Experience supporting NOAA, NASA, or national space mission programs, particularly ground systems  
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a willingness to foster strong relationships with coworkers and vendors. 
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail 
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills  
  • Experience leading projects and process improvement activities to completion with successful outcomes and delivery of desired results.  
  • Active Public Trust clearance

Target Salary Range

$80,000 - $128,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
