Responsibilities

Peraton is seeking a highly skilled Cloud Operations Engineer/Architect to design, implement, and maintain secure cloud infrastructure as a member of the CIO organization in support of the FAA BNATCS program. This role is responsible for architecting and operating cloud solutions that meet stringent federal security and compliance requirements, with specific alignment to the NIST 800-53 framework. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in cloud platforms, a strong operational mindset, and experience working within regulated federal environments.

 

Key Responsibilities may include:

Cloud Architecture & Deployment

  • Design and implement secure cloud environments across AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Build and manage cloud infrastructure components (compute, storage, networking, IAM).
  • Support hybrid and multi-cloud deployments with a focus on scalability and resilience.
  • Design and implement secure, scalable, and resilient cloud architectures supporting FAA BNATCS systems
  • Deploy infrastructure using best‑practice cloud patterns, ensuring high availability and performance
  • Develop Infrastructure‑as‑Code templates for consistent, repeatable environment provisioning
  • Evaluate and integrate cloud‑native services to improve mission delivery
  • Ensure architectures align with enterprise standards, FAA requirements, and modernization goals

Security & Compliance

  • Integrate NIST 800-53 security controls into cloud architecture and operations.
  • Implement encryption, identity and access management, logging, and monitoring in compliance with federal standards.
  • Partner with cybersecurity teams to ensure continuous monitoring and vulnerability management.
  • Support audits, assessments, and accreditation processes (e.g., FISMA, FedRAMP).
  • Support ATO processes, documentation, and continuous monitoring activities
  • Conduct security assessments, gap analysis, and remediation activities
  • Work with cybersecurity teams to ensure continuous alignment with federal compliance frameworks

Automation & Optimization

  • Develop automation scripts and workflows to streamline deployment and operations CloudFormation, or ARM templates.
  • Automate deployment, configuration, and monitoring processes.
  • Optimize cloud performance, cost, and resource utilization.
  • Implement CI/CD pipelines to support efficient and secure application delivery
  • Automate compliance checks and configuration management baselines
  • Continuously improving infrastructure efficiency through monitoring and analytics

Operations & Support

  • Monitor cloud infrastructure for performance, availability, and cost efficiency
  • Troubleshoot cloud systems, resolve incidents, and perform root‑cause analysis
  • Maintain system health through patching, updates, and lifecycle management
  • Support operational runbooks, SOPs, and incident response processes
  • Ensure reliable day‑to‑day operation of mission‑critical FAA environments

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Work closely with application, data, and security teams to deliver compliant cloud solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance on cloud best practices in regulated environments.
  • Contribute to modernization initiatives and cloud migration projects.
  • Partner with cybersecurity, compliance, engineering, and FAA stakeholders to deliver integrated solutions
  • Provide technical guidance and architectural recommendations to project teams
  • Lead design reviews, technical discussions, and cloud strategy sessions
  • Support documentation, knowledge sharing, and team skill development
  • Communicate complex cloud concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree, 3+ years with a Master's degree, or a PhD in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience in IT infrastructure engineering, cloud architecture, and/or systems design
  • Strong knowledge of NIST 800-53 security controls and federal compliance frameworks (FISMA, FedRAMP)
  • Hands‑on experience designing, deploying, and operating cloud environments on AWS, Azure, and/or GCP
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure‑as‑Code tools such as Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or Azure ARM/Bicep
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Professional certifications such as
    • AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional)
    • AWS Certified SysOps/CloudOps Administrator
    • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator or Azure Solutions Architect
    • CISSP or CCSP
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain/maintain an FAA Public Trust suitability
  • This is a 100% on-site position; Candidates must reside within commuting distance of our Herndon/Chantilly, VA or Bowie, MD locations
  • Occasional travel to Peraton and customer facilities in the National Capital Region may be required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to translate federal regulatory and security requirements into technical cloud architecture solutions
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving abilities
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to document architecture, processes, and compliance artifacts clearly
  • Experience working within federal, DoD, or other regulated enterprise environments

Target Salary Range

$104,000 - $166,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
