Responsibilities

NASA’s Sounding Rocket Operations Contract (NSROC) is a sub-orbital space flight program located at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility (WFF), a part of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). NSROC provides suborbital launch vehicles, payload development and field operations support to NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. The program enables the collection of Earth, Heliophysics and Astrophysics science.

 

The Mechanical Engineering Supervisor is a member of the NSROC (NASA’s Sounding Rocket Operations Contract NSROC) IV Engineering Management Team and reports directly to the Engineering Manager.  The ME Supervisor leads a team of Mechanical Engineers, the Environmental Testing team, and the Launcher crew.  They ensure the ME Group provides designs and analysis that meet or exceed programmatic requirements.

 

Responsibilities of the position: 

  • Lead a team of mechanical engineers in the support of sounding rocket missions, projects, and assignments as assigned to teams under the direction of Mission Managers and Systems Engineers.
  • Direct, review and critique staff work for completeness, accuracy and adherence to program policies and standards.
  • Provide oversight over the Environmental Testing team and Launcher Systems teams.
  • Serve as a mentor for the mechanical engineering staff.
  • Review and approve mechanical engineering procedures and work instructions.
  • Prepare technical reports for management to document project status.
  • Coordinate with production on mechanical engineering fabrication activities.
  • Manage the mechanical engineering hardware within the stock system, including raw materials and the introduction of new parts and purchase requests.
  • Coordinate with hardware vendors on procurements and technical issues.
  • Provide management with cost effective and innovative solutions to issues.
  • Manage the technical aspects of individual mechanical engineering projects.
  • Present to program management and NASA on major development activities and issues.
  • Manage the mechanical engineering financial budget.
  • Verify that appropriate QMS processes, procedures and work instructions are being used/followed within the group.
  • Review/authorize change requests and disposition non-conformances.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or required.
  • Travel may be up to 2-3 weeks per year.

  • Change Request & Redline
  • Lessons Learned Training
  • Business Travel Standards

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering or Science related field (Mechanical Engineering degree is preferred)
  • Six years of related experience.
  • Experience with SolidWorks and SolidWorks Simulation or similar design and analysis tools.
  • Experience with Mechanical Engineering Drawing& MBD Standards
  • Current, or ability to obtain, secret level security clearance preferred

Desired Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • Two or years of supervisory experience or project lead experience preferred
  • Experience with ISO 9001
  • Experience with mechanical manufacturing processes
  • Experience with sounding rocket or suborbital mechanical systems
  • Experience with SolidWorks preferred

Target Salary Range

$86,000 - $138,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
