Help shape the future of U.S. airspace safety and efficiency. We are seeking a Telecommunications Workstream Safety Lead  to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. The ideal candidate will provide safety oversight, compliance assurance, and risk management for FAA’s telecommunications modernization initiatives. In this role, you will lead safety risk assessments, hazard analyses, and mitigation planning for telecommunications infrastructure and services including data, voice, and secure communications. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain in-depth experience in federal contracting while supporting high-visibility aviation programs.

 

In this position, you will:

  • Conducting root cause analysis and driving corrective/preventive actions.

  • Manage and evaluate contractor and subcontractor safety performance.

  • Lead safety risk management activities across telecommunications systems and workstreams.

  • Develop, implement, and oversee safety assessments, hazard analyses, and corrective actions.

  • Ensure compliance with FAA Safety Management System (SMS), OSHA, NFPA, and federal safety standards.

  • Provide safety expertise during design reviews, modernization planning, and system readiness assessments.

  • Oversee testing, validation, and verification of telecommunications systems, ensuring safety requirements are met.

  • Conduct safety audits, inspections, and incident investigations.

  • Maintain accurate, audit-ready safety documentation, reports, and risk registers.

  • Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and FAA stakeholders to embed safety-by-design principles.

  • Support integration of NextGen telecommunications capabilities with NAS systems.

  • Deliver briefings and safety recommendations to FAA leadership and senior stakeholders.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship Required.
  • Must have the ability to obtain / maintain a Public Trust clearance.
  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years’ of experience; or Masters degree and 6 years; or Associate’s degree and 10 years’ experience; or HS diploma/equivalent and 12 years’ experience.  
  • Experience in system safety, preferably in telecommunications, aerospace, or federal programs.

  • Strong knowledge of safety engineering methodologies (FMEA, FTA, hazard analysis).

  • Familiarity with telecommunications systems (voice, data, fiber, and IP-based communications).

  • Experience developing and maintaining safety cases, hazard logs, and compliance reports.

  • Strong knowledge of network and telecommunications resiliency standards.
  • Ability to integrate safety with cybersecurity, availability, and interoperability requirements.
  • Familiarity with risk monitoring tools and safety performance metrics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct FAA or NAS configuration management experience.
  • Professional certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CSEP (Certified Systems Engineering Professional), or PE (Professional Engineer).

  • Experience supporting FAA NextGen modernization programs or NAS telecommunications systems.

  • Familiarity with international aviation safety standards (ICAO, ITU-T).

  • Background in fiber optics, wireless, or satellite communications safety.

  • Experience using automated tools for safety analysis, monitoring, and reporting.

  • Experience with FAA or federal safety standards related to telecommunications systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply FAA SMS principles and federal safety frameworks.

Target Salary Range

$104,000 - $166,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
