Help shape the future of U.S. airspace safety and efficiency. We are seeking a to Voice Communications Workstream Safety Lead join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. The ideal candidate will provide safety oversight, compliance assurance, and risk management across FAA’s voice communications systems. In this role, you will ensure that safety considerations are fully embedded into the design, integration, testing, and sustainment of voice communication platforms, including legacy-to-modern VoIP migrations. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain in-depth experience in federal contracting while supporting high-visibility aviation programs.

 

In this position, you will:

  • Lead safety risk management activities for FAA voice communication systems.

  • Develop safety documentation, safety cases, and compliance reports.

  • Conduct root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions.

  • Develop, implement, and oversee safety assessments, hazard analyses, and mitigation strategies.

  • Ensure compliance with FAA Safety Management System (SMS), OSHA, and federal safety requirements.

  • Provide safety input during system design reviews, modernization planning, and readiness assessments.

  • Oversee safety testing, validation, and verification of voice communication systems, including VoIP.

  • Conduct safety audits, inspections, and incident investigations to ensure compliance.

  • Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and stakeholders to embed safety requirements into system design and integration.

  • Maintain accurate and audit-ready safety documentation, reports, and risk registers.

  • Ensure safety considerations are integrated into modernization programs such as NextGen.

  • Define and track safety performance metrics and continuous monitoring frameworks.

  • Provide safety briefings and recommendations to FAA leadership and program stakeholders.

  • Work with engineers, program managers, and FAA stakeholders to ensure these critical systems meet the highest standards of safety, resiliency, and reliability.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship Required.
  • Must have the ability to obtain / maintain a Public Trust clearance.
  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of experience; or Masters degree and 6 years; or Associate’s degree and 10 years’ experience; or HS diploma/equivalent and 12 years experience.  
  • Experience in system safety or safety leadership roles.
  • Strong knowledge of safety risk management frameworks and hazard analysis methodologies (FTA, FMEA, hazard logs).
  • Familiarity with voice communication systems, VoIP, or Radio-over-IP (RoIP) technologies.
  • Knowledge of federal acquisition processes and safety standards.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct FAA or NAS configuration management experience.
  • Experience applying FAA Safety Management System (SMS) standards.

  • Familiarity with FAA voice switch systems, legacy-to-modern communications, and interoperability requirements.

  • Experience supporting FAA NextGen modernization programs or NAS voice communications initiatives.

  • Professional certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CSEP (Certified Systems Engineering Professional), or PE (Professional Engineer).

  • Familiarity with ICAO international safety standards for air traffic communication systems.

  • Experience with automated safety analysis tools or safety data visualization platforms.

  • Background in aviation communications infrastructure, including ATC voice systems.

Target Salary Range

$104,000 - $166,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
