Responsibilities

Peraton is seeking a Junior Java Software Developer in Herndon, VA or Aurora, CO to support Intelligence Community and DoD customers as part of a talented, high-performing team. As part of this team you will work with emerging service and distributed computing technologies for satellite situational awareness (SSA) data processing and distribution. 

 

The EMMETT program, a next gen Space Domain Awareness (SDA) Indications and Warning (I&W) system, establishes a repository of resident space objects (RSOs), finds RSOs of interest, and provides data to ground operators. The EMMETT team uses: programmatics, sensor modeling, and system engineering expertise to deliver this world-class SDA I&W system. 

 

What you'll do:

  • Provide TS/SCI Java software development of modules. Some of these techniques include but are not limited to, event-driven or state-driven programming, error logging, and exception handling.
  • Perform TS/SCI software analysis, architecture, engineering, and integration services at the unit, module, and system levels.
  • Perform all aspects of software engineering support required to implement systems.
  • Adhere to open standards and modern software development methodologies, including what is considered ‘best’ practices by Industry to the extent that operational requirements will allow.
  • Provide technical reports, white papers and other documentation as required to documents findings of all software engineering service activities.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • An associate's degree with 4+ years of relevant experience; OR a bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of relevant experience. 6+ years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • This position requires the candidate possess a minimum of TS/SCI with the ability to pass a polygraph within 30 days of employment or at customers request- contract requires TS/SCI with poly. The candidate must maintain the clearance.
  • Proficiency in Java, with a foundational understanding of object-oriented programming, basic design patterns, and enterprise concepts such as messaging, security, and JPA.
  • Experience working with the Spring Framework, including Spring Boot, for building and deploying Java applications.
  • Basic testing and debugging skills, including writing JUnit tests, using remote debugging tools (e.g., JDWP), and applying common Spring annotations.
  • Exposure to various databases—relational (e.g., PostgreSQL), object/document-based (e.g., MongoDB), and key/value-based (e.g., Redis)—including the ability to write and execute queries across these systems.
  • Comfortable using Linux-based systems, including basic shell commands and file system navigation.
  • Familiarity with messaging systems like ActiveMQ or Kafka, and a general understanding of integration concepts (e.g., Apache Camel).
  • Working knowledge of web technologies, including HTTP, HTML, REST, WebSocket, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience building and consuming REST APIs in Java-based applications.
  • Basic familiarity with version control tools, such as Git and Gerrit.
  • Experience using collaboration platforms, including JIRA and Confluence.
  • Exposure to Java development environments and build tools, such as IntelliJ, Eclipse, VS Code, Gradle, and Maven.
  • Familiarity with Helm charts is a plus, but not required.
  • General understanding of microservices and containerization concepts, with exposure to Docker and Kubernetes environments.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Basic scripting experience, preferably in Python, for automation or data manipulation tasks.
  • Introductory experience configuring web servers, such as NGINX or Apache, for local development or basic hosting.
  • Familiarity with front-end frameworks like Bootstrap and Less, with an interest in responsive design.
  • Exposure to Apache NiFi, including building simple data flows or modifying existing process groups.
  • Interest in cybersecurity, with an active CompTIA Security+ CE certification or plans to pursue one.
  • Awareness of the Space Situational Awareness (SSA) domain, and curiosity about astrodynamics toolkits such as Orekit, Hipparchus, or OD++.

Target Salary Range

$80,000 - $128,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
