Responsibilities

We are seeking a Journeyman Electrical Wiring Engineer to provide aviation wiring systems support for our NAVAIR customer in Lexington Park/Patuxent River, MD. In this position you will have the opportunity to be part of the Navy’s world class Electrical Wiring Team, developing critical capabilities to support the fleet.

 

This position is in the customer’s Wiring Systems Branch, of the Power and Energy Division, of the Propulsion and Power Engineering Department, of the Air Systems Group of the Naval Air Systems Command. The scope of the work performed has direct impact on Aircraft Electrical Wiring System performance, operation and support cost, operational suitability, safety, reliability, and readiness. The affected Electrical Wiring System Programs are valued in the multimillion-dollar range annually.

 

What you will do…

  • Define electrical wiring system and interface requirements for weapon systems. Be responsible for the portions of the weapon system and electrical wiring system detail specifications pertaining to assigned system areas and their interface.
  • Evaluate design proposals received in response to formal competition, as well as unsolicited, for weapon systems, and weapons’ electrical wiring systems including the interface thereof, and submit formal evaluations and recommendations to the customer.
  • Manage and participate in the engineering effort involved in the research, design, development, test, and evaluation and production engineering of electrical wiring systems, as assigned, as well as the correction of service problems with Fleet systems. Manage engineering programs for assigned Fleet electrical wiring systems and equipment to ensure the highest level of readiness.
  • Responsibility for performing the following configuration management duties: a. Evaluate ECPs (Engineering Change Proposals) for engineering, program, and financial practicality; b. make recommendations to approve or to disapprove ECPs, including responsibility for the coordination of acceptable ECPs with other elements.
  • Prepare official correspondence and written briefings for management review. Prepare and present oral briefings on technical and management aspects of assigned systems and programs. Originate and prepare various documents such as Procurement Requests (PRs), Non-Compliant Reports (NCRs) to support system development and production contracts.

Qualifications

You would be a great fit if you have…

  • A minimum of a BS degree in Electrical Engineering and 8 years of professional experience of progressively more responsible work; or a MS degree with 6 years of relevant experience; or a PhD and 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Electrical Wiring Systems experience, preferably related to aircraft and aircraft-related systems; however, electrical wiring experience in other fields such as utilities and transportation (e.g. locomotive, automotive, shipboard) is acceptable.
  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles and practices of engineering that enable you to serve as an expert in the design, development, evaluation, and service application of Electrical Wiring Systems.
  • Experience with Electrical Wiring Systems exposed to the severe altitude, temperature, vibration, and shock conditions associated with airborne applications is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of aircraft wiring technology and cabling (power, data, coax), aircraft wiring connectors.
  • Knowledge and experience with: Wiring specifications, standards (AS50881), installation, and inspection requirements, wiring test procedures, failure analysis, harness design standards, signal integrity and signal types (AC/DC power, digital and RF bandwidth), EMI, shielding, grounding, and bonding.
  • Experience with wiring protocols: MIL-STD-1553, Ethernet, USB, RS-232, RS-485
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance, which requires a US citizen.

 

It would be even better if you have…

  • Experience with Fiber Optics: Requirements, standards, specifications, installation, inspection, and testing.
  • Ability to execute and handle technically challenging Aircraft Electrical Wiring System programs.
  • Ability to perform trade-offs between cost and capability as a routine requirement.
  • Ability to develop, prepare, and present technical advice to higher program authority and to Integrated Program team members.
  • Excellent teamwork.

Target Salary Range

$112,000 - $179,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
