Responsibilities

Peraton is seeking a Senior System Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position is located in McLean/Herndon, VA (remote accepted). The qualified applicant will become part of Peraton’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Infrastructure Managed Services (IMS) Program, for the US Coast Guard (CG). This initiative is modernizing and consolidating the operational environment under a common technology framework in order to better support the services provided to CGs customers. As part of the modernization program, the Senior Software Engineer will be responsible for proactively leading architecture and development decision making with the client and IMS team, and serve as a platform engineer in developing or remediating services in a multi cloud operating model, and ensure effective service transitions to support for ongoing continuous improvement.

Day to Day Work Responsibilities:

  • Define software requirements, both functional and non-functional, as high level epics, features and user stories to support SAFe or other industry standard Agile frameworks.
  • Architect complex software systems using a multi cloud architecture and microservices.
  • Design and build software using industry standard design patterns and best practices to improve maintainability, flexibility, performance, security, and availability.
  • Develop database solutions for managing structured and unstructured data.
  • Develop automated unit and integration tests, and incorporate them in CI/CD pipelines.
  • Create and implement automated configuration and deployment processes to enhance the performance, accessibility, and ease of management of platforms and related services.
  • Establish and manage administrator and service accounts, while also maintaining accurate system documentation and effectively resolving technical issues.
  • Utilize scripting tools to craft self-service capabilities within the Platform as a Service (PaaS), fostering a seamless developer experience for development teams.
  • Collaborate closely with developers and service line owners to diagnose and troubleshoot problems, ensuring smooth operations.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with 8+ years experience, master's degree with 6+ years' experience or high school diploma/GED with 12+ years' experience.
  • U.S. Citizenship required; must have an active Secret clearance.
  • Proficiency in developing and administering AWS and Azure Gov Cloud environments in compliance with DoD standards. Stronger bias for Azure preferred, but have strong skills in both.
  • Proficient in use of most industry standard Infrastructure as Code (IAC) tools, with strong skills in tooling such as GitLab, Ansible and Terreform for building and managing service components.
  • Strong skills and demonstrated experience using Python, Java and C# development languages; Skilled in developing automation solutions using scripting languages to streamline recurring tasks (e.g. Linux, BASH and SHELL).
  • Familiarity with networking concepts and practical experience involving technologies like Load Balancers, DNS, NACLs, SSL, Firewalls, NAT, and NTP.
  • Background in DevOps and ITIL V4 automation practices and ITSM frameworks, and strong skills in cloud management platforms such as OpenShift, Rancher, and/or Nutanix Cloud Manager.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct experience proactively interacting with clients to define and achieve goals and objectives.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot operating systems and platform services effectively.
  • Experience handling large-scale production systems, and adeptness in resolving production-related challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills, and a keen interest in collaborative work environments.
  • Enthusiasm for skill and capability growth, with a penchant for tackling intriguing challenges, and addressing complex problem, performance or security issues.
  • Subject Matter Expertise in Linux Operating Systems administration.
  • Expertise in container orchestration, specifically Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with Department of Defense (DoD) operations, particularly within a DoD "Software Factory" context. Commercial Software Factory context is highly valued too.
  • A degree (BA/BS) in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting challenges using the Linux/Unix command line interface.
  • Skilled in with AKS (Azure Kubernetes Service) and other container management services.
  • Possession of recognized Professional Certifications such as ITIL V4, Linux+, AWS Cloud Practitioner, Azure Solutions Architect, Security+, CISSP, and SAFe or other Agile frameworks.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in written contexts.

Target Salary Range

$104,000 - $166,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
