Responsibilities

Peraton is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Technician to support the Mechanical Integration group at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

 

The position falls under the Environmental Testing Integration Services program.  The candidate will perform moderate to complex tasks, demonstrating an ability to achieve full competency. Will work in group settings and independently. Perform duties in areas such as integration of flight and non-flight hardware parts and assemblies, cleanroom operations, inspections and utilization of lifting and handling devices, assistance in performing spacecraft environment and proof tests, repairing and maintaining equipment, assembly and utilization of ground support equipment (GSE) for both flight and non-flight uses. Works frequently in a cleanroom environment. Displays an aptitude for basic machining, metal cutting, and use of hand tools and precision measuring devices. May perform additional unspecified duties associated to mechanical integration.

  • Assists and leads in the assembly and testing of flight and non-flight hardware parts, assemblies, and GSE from provided drawings and documentation.
  • Will work with engineers and other technicians in the assembly, integration, lifting, transport, and launch support of spaceflight components, hardware, instruments and spacecraft.
  • Conducts tests or experiments; analyzes results and suggests modifications to equipment to improve performance and reports results.
  • Assists in the planning and performance of tests to evaluate equipment. Conducts tests using all types of instruments and assists in preparing data and reports.
  • May also perform temporary duties in other areas or other duties associated with area of assignment.
  • Acquires and maintains certifications that are applicable; such as overhead crane operation, electrostatic discharge control (ESD), mobile aerial platform training, etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in confined spaces, cleanrooms, or other specialty environments for an extended period of time.
  • Possesses fundamental understanding of machine shop practices and the use of tools such as band saws, grinders, and drill presses.
  • Must be capable of passing required physical examinations and successfully completing assigned training or other required training or certifications. Must possess Powered Industrial Truck Operator (PIT) Certification, Mobile Aerial Platform operator (MAP) Certification, and Crane/Hoist/Winch/Rigger Certification, OR, is able to obtain certifications.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma and minimum of 8 years of direct experience working with flight hardware (6 years of direct NASA project experience) and mechanical systems OR has demonstrated working knowledge with precision hardware and components  
  • Military or technical school training is a plus
  • Experience providing fabrication support as well as working across other disciplines or systems such as electrical, optical, cryogenics, environmental test
  • Knowledge of engineering terms and ability to operate computers 
  • Ability to perform with minimal supervision, lead other technicians, read and interpret schematics, and work from sketches and drawings

Desired Qualifications:  

  • Possesses solid understanding of machine shop practices and the use of tools such as band saws, grinders, and drill presses. Experience with more complicated machine shop tools such as a lathe or mill.
  • Experience providing fabrication support as well as working across other disciplines or systems such as electrical, optical, cryogenics, environmental test.
  • Experience working with assembly and part drawings.
  • Experience with electrical bonding and grounding
  • Experience working with composite and bonding materials
